Nudge Fitness™ is about helping people become more active and support them in achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Advances in modern technology coupled with our hectic lifestyles has hindered our ability to lead an active life. Our goal is simple - to provide people with information about physical activity and healthy eating by nudging them in the right direction.

The concept of Nudge Fitness™ is around giving a helping hand or 'nudge' that will help you in becoming more active over a sustained period of time. The goal is not to just to become active temporarily, but to actively pursue small lifestyle changes that can be ingrained into everyday activities and as a result, improve your health.

Research has shown that small changes in behaviour can have a significant impact on our health. Nudge Fitness™ simply helps people to become more active without the expense of joining a gym. Although we acknowledge that for some people the gym may be the best approach, for others the cost, time and motivation can be barriers which are hard to overcome. This is where Nudge Fitness™ comes in.

Nudge Fitness™ was influenced by the 'nudge theory' devised by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein. The theory is about choices - how people make them and how we can make better ones. Authors Richard H. Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein give a new perspective on preventing the countless mistakes we make - including ill-advised personal investments, consumption of unhealthy foods, neglect of our natural resources, and other bad decisions. Although the theory primarily talks about how organisations and governments can influence the choices we make, this website is about how people can be empowered to make better choices for the good of themselves.

Matthew Pearce MSc PgDip BSc (Hons) MFPH FRSPH


Having worked in public health for over 10 years Matt has accumulated a wealth of experience and expertise in population health and behaviour change. He originally graduated in Sport and Physical Education from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Development and a Master’s degree in Public Health. He is currently undertaking a PhD at the Cardiff University

Matt’s career has been dedicated to promoting the field of exercise and public health. He is a specialist in physical activity, weight management and obesity having worked in the private sector, NHS and local authority.Matt has a range of research interests including technology, arts and health and the built environment. Matt is also a Defined Specialist in Public Health, amember of the Faculty of Public Health and Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health.

He is also a visiting lecturer at the University of the West of England and supports the delivery of modules including epidemiology of non-communicable disease and health promotion.He is also a UKPHR specialist assessor and previouslypresented Expert Testimony to inform NICE guidance on obesity.

Matthew founded Nudge Fitness™ after identifying the need to provide unbiased advice and information to people on health, fitness and nutrition. At the heart of Nudge Fitness™ is its goal to share research and evidence on best practice and make this information accessible to the public. Matthew’s belief is that we are all capable of leading a healthier lifestyle and that this can be achieved by making small changes to our lifestyles that will lead to a healthier and happier future.
