Falls can be devastating, resulting in a loss of confidence and an increase in anxiety about possible future falls. The risk of falling increases with age as balance deteriorates. Falls are the most common cause of hospital admissions and poor balance more than doubles with age increasing the risk of being seriously injured in a fall.

Research into the falls of elderly people shows that:
