Respiratory conditions are largely managed by drug therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation but smoking cessation, exercise and education also play an important role. The role of exercise has been highlighted for some time as a means for individuals with respiratory conditions to decrease symptoms such as breathlessness, improve exercise tolerance and improve health related quality of life.

Individuals with respiratory disease can generally reap the same health benefits as healthy individuals. However due to the their condition the main purpose of exercise training is to improve skeletal muscle function because stronger and more efficient muscles will reduce symptoms of breathlessness, increase exercise tolerance and levels of daily activity
